Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
We are seeking a skilled Controls & Automation Engineer to help us in our mission by designing, implementing, and commissioning the control systems behind our rocket engine test infrastructure. This role involves working hands-on with Beckhoff TwinCAT, setting up PLC hardware, developing robust software in Structured Text, and collaborating with software and test teams to ensure safe, testable, and maintainable control system behavior.
You will own the entire PLC stack — from configuring EtherCAT devices and wiring checks to developing well-structured control logic.
Key responsibilities:
Commission and configure Beckhoff PLC systems including fieldbus (EtherCAT), I/O modules, and safety components
Develop structured and maintainable control software using TwinCAT 3 (Structured Text)
Implement structured, fault-tolerant control logic for valves, sensors, test sequencing, and safety interlocks
Commission and troubleshoot PLC systems during test bench bring-up, including I/O and fieldbus validation
Participate in test campaigns by supporting live operations and verifying control system behavior alongside test engineers
What we would love to see from you:
Proven experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT 3, including commissioning of hardware and development in Structured Text
Understanding of industrial fieldbus systems (especially EtherCAT) and test stand instrumentation
Experience designing modular, maintainable PLC applications with attention to testability and observability
A structured, safety-oriented approach to fault handling, interlocks, and control logic
Ability to work cross-functionally with software and test engineering teams
Motivation to work in a fast-paced environment with demanding timelines
High attention to detail with an ability to balance quality & speed
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Fluency in English
Desirable:
Experience with version-controlled PLC development using Git
Experience with automated testing of PLC logic (e.g., using TcUnit)
Background in aerospace, automotive test stands, or other high-reliability control environments
Understanding of basic signal processing, sensor calibration, and safety PLC concepts (SIL/PL)
